Cheeseburger-review.com is a gathering of Cheeseburger evaluations by Dick Collier and friends.

So who is Dick Collier and why would his opinion matter?
Well, I am just a guy who loves the all American beef cheeseburger, I have for 50+ years. I could eat them 5 times/day without getting tired of them. I've had my share from coast to coast and ten countries around the globe. I feel that it is time to start documenting this feast and share my experiences. I have to say, it is getting harder to judge the burgers, there are so many places that make a great burger. But, I still haven't found my 5 star ***** burger yet. The quest continues...

History Lesson...
The Classic American Cheeseburger was invented by Louis Ballast back in 1935. Since then, just about everyone and their cousin has opened a burger joint, some very good, some not so good, but mostly pretty good.

Well, another perspective on this one says that the brothers, Frank and Charles Menches of Ohio invented the hamburger and that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger! I don't know, or care, you decide. I am just glad someone did. How many billions have sold?

The Quest...

TO FIND THE ULTIMATE TASTY CHEESEBURGER!!

I would like to make this site a place where everyone can share their favorite burger.

My evaluations are usually done with the same basic cheeseburger, I don't add any other meats. The basic burger is a bun, beef patty and condiments. Doing the evaluation this way allows me judge the quality and freshness of each burger joint. Somehow, they all have a bit of a different taste, but some simply stand out more than others..

Email me a quality photo of your special cheeseburger with your comments, along with the location of your burger joint, and I will get it posted.

Tap Room Burger

Schlafly's Brewery
St. Louis, MO

Tap Room Burger

A review by Marc Ellison

Burger on an english muffin - damn good!

This burger was from schlafly's brewery in st louis. It was thick (over 1 inch) with cheese, tomato, lettuce, and sauce.
The fries were thin cut and crunchy - just how I like them. Adding the fact that they make their own beer makes this a must eat place in downtown st louis.
4 stars and a clink of a pint of ale.

I'll have to try it to rate it! Thanks Marc

Johnson's Sliders

This was a great idea. Small 2 oz fresh ground round broiled to perfection. Add some cheddar cheese, kechup, mustard, dill pickle and bermuda onion and mount it on a toasted dinner roll...... you're in for a treat.

Thanks Johnson!

Dave & Busters - Dave's Double Cheeseburger

Dave & Busters
Utica, MI

Dave's Double

*****This is my new # 1*****

This was (2) 8oz, high quality beef cooked to a perfect medium with double slices of American cheese. The cheese and burger juice was dripping off this guy. It was so juicy that the patties were guishing (is that a word?) out the back side of the bun. I had to keep eating the beef coming out of the back of the bun to keep things together. Folks, this was a 1 lb burger from heaven garnished with the usual; lettuce, tomato, red Bermuda onion and mayo mounted on a white hamburger roll (the mgr said it comes from 2 guys). This guy is going to be hard to beat. I am giving this my first 5 star rating.

The atmosphere, with the exception of the light tobacco smoke, was great; two large bars, games galore, billiards, shuffleboard and golf. I was surprised it wasn’t busier, but we hit it on a Monday night.

Thanks Dave & Busters!

Kobe Burger with American cheese

Auburn Ale House
Old Town
Auburn, CA

Kobe Burger

The Kobe burger with American cheese was another fantastic treat for the old burger buds. This burger was an 8oz patty made from Kobe beef (I assume this is the real Kobe beef from Japan!) For those of you who have never been to Japan for their Kobe beef steaks..... you're really missing something special. This something special showed up here, in a burger. The garnish was superb, very fresh and all the good ones I like; lettuce, tomato and red onion. But the toper was the delicious onion bun and a touch of mayo... Sweet!

The brew pub atmosphere and lager beer was great. The burger was a bit pricey, but for Kobe beef... no problem!

This guy made my top 10. It's really getting hard to rate with all these great burgers.

Auburn Ale House is one I highly recommend when traveling through Auburn, CA. It's right off I80..

Hodads Bacon Cheeseburger

Hodads
Ocean Beach, CA

The Cheddar Burger

Here is a new review from Frank V. This burger is screaming to be tried!

"Cant believe you have not tried  a Hodads Burger they are in in Ocean Beach,Ca .Also real ice cream Malt shakes  made fresh. Here are some pics. I agree with you on IN-N-OUT, this place is argued by many to be better, very, very close. What's  different about hodads is  they boil their bacon they fry it on the grill and make a patty out of it, like hash browns, it covers the entire burger, your juts not getting 2 pieces of bacon. Also their meat is fresh never frozen, that's a big difference in what makes or breaks a burger IMO"

No Rating until I can get down to Hodads and dig in!

Sparky's Road House
Eureka Springs, AR

Sparky's Cheeseburger

The Sparky Cheeseburger with Monterey Jack cheese $6.95

This burger was made with a generous ½ lb fresh, handmade, premium creekstone Angus beef with lettuce, tomato, onion & pickles on a fresh Kaiser bun. The Jack cheese was just oozing off the patty, "sweet"!
I can’t imagine why someone would go across the street to McDonalds with Sparkys right here (well maybe the price; $6 vs $11).
I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the Ozarks.

Atmosphere: Patios dining, kind of rustic – tin covered patio with heaters. It was raining the day I was there so there was a bit more atmosphere with the rain hitting the tin roof. They also didn't’t charge for the rain drops that made it through the roof to the floor.

No question, this was another great burger in the quest
for the BEST..

Tylman's Tantalizer Cheeseburger

Tylman's Tantalizer Burger
Southern California

Matt "the man's" Cheeseburger

Here is another one you can't get, unless you know my family. Having rated my other son-in-law's BBQ skills, I had to see what Matt "the man" could conjurer up

Well, I've got to tell you, this was an awesome cheeseburger. All the right fixins, including american cheese and a fresh Kaiser bun made this one to remember. I think the chopped onions and a well toasted bun was a hit. The burger was created with fresh ground round with a bit of spices (not too much but just right, I will call this "man spice"), fresh tomato and lettuce.

It must have been good because I had two of these bad boys.

Thanks Matt
(you may have moved slightly ahead of Dan, but I'll have to try another cook-off to be sure!)

Hell's Cheddar Burger

Hell's Kitchen
Wilmington, NC

The Cheddar Burger

8oz's of perfectly cooked Angus beef on a Kaiser roll.

This is about all that needs to be said after you look at the picture. I have to admit, I did have a few Bud Lights before I had this guy, but highly unlikely it changed my opinion on its taste!

I actually had this one to go and had a 10 minute walk back to my hotel room, which I am sure took a little away from the "just off the grill" taste. This guy was perfectly cooked, a gorgeous pink, and so much flavor. Garnished with my usual; lettuce, tomato & red onion, really completed this burger. The juiciness of this burger was exquisite. I know it was good because I walked all the way back to Hell's Kitchen, that same night, and had another one, this time at the bar!

G R E A T Burger!

Way to go Hell's Kitchen and thanks for the beer Steve.

Cheeburger Cheeburger

Cheeburger Cheeburger
Roanoke, VA

The Serious Cheeseburger

OK, it’s been awhile since I’ve had a really really good cheeseburger (maybe a couple months!), but this burger was one of the best!

This was called their “Serious” cheeseburger. 10 oz of Black Angus beef cooked to a perfect medium. People, this burger was a 4-5 napkin event, it could have been some of my drawling, but this guy was juicy.

Cheeburger Cheeburger was tucked away in the Tanglewood Mall located in Roanoke, VA, (barely saw the sign). It’s kind of like an old malt shoppe and looked to have great shakes. For me, I had the cheeseburger mounted on top of shredded lettuce with tomato, American cheese, mayo and a giant slice of fresh yellow onion. The bun was good but was a little flimsy for the amount of juice it had to hold in. They actually give you a knife and fork in case you can’t eat it quickly enough for the bun to continue to work. Two other bonuses that  this place had; the fries were great and the waitress was a doll!

Angelo's Drive-in
Anaheim, CA

1/2 Lb. Gourmet Cheese Burger

I have been going to Angelo's for years, but have not yet put them on review. This is one of my favorite places that I visit whenever I am in town. The double pattys are a must, it really brings out the flavor.

This char broiled burger comes with shredded lettuce, great tomatoes and chopped onions. With the added American cheese, great bun and thousand island sauce, this burger definitely belongs on the top 10 list.

Oh yeah, the skating waitresses are hard on the eyes and the beers didn't bother me either!

Another G R E A T Burger that I highly recommend!

Pelican Pool Bar @ the Daytona Beach Hilton
Daytona Beach, FL

Admiral's Cheeseburger

If you're ever in Dayton Beach, especially at the Hilton, do yourself a favor and stop and have a burger at the pool bar. What great atmosphere, the pool at your back and the beach at your front. Plenty of things to watch (if you know what I mean!)

It was a 1/3lb of high quality beef burger with 2 slices of American cheese, cooked to a medium, on a white roll.. The garnish was; lettuce, tomato and red bermuda onion. This guy had some good taste without the mayo, I added a little ketchup & mustard to put more juice to it.

I'd definitely come back here. Did I mention NASCAR?

Long Ravine Burger

Outrigger Grill @
Long Ravine Campground

Colfax, CA

Cheeseburger

This burger is one of those you can eat every week. It is just a good tasting, campground type, cheeseburger.
It has all the basic necessities; 1/4 lb piece of beef, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, bermuda onion along with some mayo and ketchup.

The best thing about the Outrigger Grill isn't the burger, it's the beautiful green lake in a mountain setting. It is a must see and eat place. The grill is only open about 1/2 the year, so bring the boat and appetite and enjoy!

I give it:***

The Northridge Cheeseburger

The Northridge
Grass Valley, CA

The Northridge Cheeseburger

This burger was absolutely great. A ½ Pound ground chuck patty, topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo and cheddar cheese. The beef had a very good seasoned taste and was cooked perfectly medium pink. All of this put inside a fresh Kaiser roll. I put a little ketchup and mustard on it to give it a bit more juice.

The atmosphere at the Northridge is one of being at your home. It is something like an old farm house. We enjoyed the backroom where there were plenty of big screens to watch the ball game.

Maybe I was just hungry for a good burger, but I am putting this one on my top 10 list.

Gordon Biersch

Gordon Biersch
Honolulu Airport, Hawaii

Gordon Biersch Cheeseburger

I thought this burger would have been much better than it was, it looked pretty good! Had it not been for the garlic fries, this would have been a waste of a lunch.

It was a 1/3lb beef burger with a slice of American cheese, cooked to medium well. It just didn't’t have any flavor. The bun was one of the best attributes of this burger. The garnish wasn't’t bad; lettuce, tomato and red onion, but I had to dress it up with a bit of mayo and ketchup  to give it some taste..

The atmosphere wasn't’t bad, if you like airports, but it was in Hawaii!

Arch Street Tavern Burger

Arch Street Tavern
Hartford, CT

Tavern Cheeseburger

Another "great" Irish tavern in a downtown area (this is’t a bad thing folks). Great atmosphere for my taste.

This burger was a char-grilled 1/3 pound of great meat. The burger has great flavor and I can still smell the juicy, oniony aroma on my fingers. It was loaded with fresh lettuce, tomato and red onion with cheddar cheese and mayo & ketchup on the side. This was another keeper places to visit when in town. They were playing some good ole 60’s rock & role, which made the tasting even better.

This one gets a 4 star. It looks like Hartford knows how to build a good burger.

Mayor Mikes Cheeseburger

Mayor Mikes Restaurant
Hartford, CT

Husky Cheeseburger

This place was one of those cool pubs in the middle of a city, this one happens to be in Hartford, it was highly recommended to me by the front desk staff at the downtown Marriott.

This was about 1/3 lb of high quality tasting ground beef patty piled on a fresh sesame seed bun. It was grilled medium and came with the usual and very fresh; lettuce, tomato and red onion. I ordered this with cheddar cheese and a side of mayo. Adding it all together, along with the Bud Light, made this a burger to return to.

I give it:****

Buckhorn Burger

Buckhorn Grill
Sacramento, CA

Buckhorn Cheeseburger

Alright, here is one classic from from John Johnson in Grass Valley. I think he may have found me a "5", but I'll need to taste this guy. For me, without the bacon & avocado.

John's review....

"This burger is a must if your anywhere in the downtown area of Sacramento,CA The place is called "Buckhorn's" on the corner of 18th Street and L Street It's called the "Midtown Burger" and midtown is where you'll need to be and walk back to your office to walk it off.
1/3 pound of God's gift to mankind "Hamburger"! Pure, Lean, and Succulent to the core. Piled high with condiments such as cheese, lettuce, pickles, avocado's, onion's, tomatoes, mayo, ketchup, and mustard on a bun that brings the entire piece of art into a functional tool that can be devoured by the beast in all of us."

Nice review John!

LuLu's Cheeseburger

LuLu's Surf Club
Waikiki Beach, Hawaii

Classic Cheeseburger

This was a great burger, great atmosphere and what a location, just across from Waikiki Beach.

This burger was made from a ½ lb or good tasting beef, cooked to a medium with just the right amount of sloppy and garnished with shredded lettuce, tomato and red onion.

LuLu’s is an open air bar & grill with a lot of fun beach people (oh yeah, tourists too)

Cheeseburger in Paradise
Waikiki Beach, Hawaii

Classic Cheeseburger

This was a pretty good burger with great beach atmosphere. It was a bit pricey for what you got. I think they could have made a better burger, but this was more of a tourist spot.

With all the same great garnish, Lettuce, tomato and onion as well as mayo, this was a pretty good burger.. I should have had the burger with fresh onion, but it came with grilled onions so I tried it. I think it made the burger too sweet.

There was a little bar in the back that I didn't get a chance to try out so, I’ll have to try it again someday.

Texas Roadhouse Burger

Texas Roadhouse
Wichata, KS

Cheeseburger

This burger was cooked to a perfect medium pink and very tasty, juicy and well prepared. Finely dressed with lettuce, tomato, bermuda onion and American cheese. With a little side of mayo. Here again, I was a very happy camper at this place.

If you think there is a depression going on around us, you couldn't tell it at this restaurant. This place was packed the entire time I was there. About every 1/2 hour, all of the waiters and waitresses start doing the Boot Scootin Boogie, pretty "off the wall", but good.

Definitely a place to visit whenever you are near one!

Cruisin Cafe Burger

Cruisin Cafe
Daytona Beach, FL

Bristol Single Cheesburger

During my visit to Daytona Beach, it was ridiculously cold, but we found a great place to have a beer and burger anyway. Too bad we were there a week before the race!

This burger was designed with a 1/2lb USDA Choice beef, char broiled to perfection along with American cheese, lettuce, tomato & onion. I almost always like a little (sometimes allot!) of mayo to jazz it up, this one got a little. The meat had a meatloaf type texture, but it was very flavorful.

Next time through, I'll be stopping again.

Five Guys Cheeseburger

Five Guys Burgers & Fries
Washington / Dulles Airport

Cheeseburger

I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of this franchised airport burger joint. This was a great burger in a place where there usually aren’t great burgers!

What can I say about this burger, it was pretty simple. It had 2 beef patties, American cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion on a white bun. There was a bit of mayo on it that picked up the taste and added some pizzazz. It was just greasy enough, 2+ napkins, and was just the right size.

I suggest giving this one a try, they have about 300 places

(I must say, the grease had to do with the rating)

I didn't realize there was such a great place right in my own backyard. This proves that there are too many burgers and not enough time!

The Monte Vista Inn is a place you have to find, it's not in a mall or on the corner, it's up in the Sierras at about the 3500 foot level. The burger was great and the atmosphere even better.

This burger was cooked to a medium rare, probably too rare for most, but for me it was tasty, juicy and well prepared. It had all the good fixins; lettuce, tomato, bermuda onion and pepper jack cheese. With a little side of mayo, it made this burger a 4 napkin masterpiece. I was pretty impressed.

I'll have to say, they should be in the burger biz because this little slice of heaven was G R E A T! They seasoned the meat with their secret recipe then cooked it just right. All the right fixins, including american cheese and a fresh white bun made this one to remember.

Quesadilla Burger

Ok, this isn't exactly a burger, but it was sent in to me by Marc from CA and he must have thought it was good. Here are his comments:

"Very flavorful and filling.  The burger comes between two grilled tortillas with Pico de Gallo, melted cheese, and a southwest sauce.  The waitress said it was a little spicy, but I think it could have been more spicy. The burger was decent size but I needed to eat it over my plate to keep the sauce from dripping on my shirt."

"I had a Bud Light as my beverage, but the beer had a strange taste so I switched to a Miller Light.  Nothing like an ice-cold beer with a tasty burger."

"A solid 3 stars"

Not worthy of a Cheeseburger rating!

Nicky Rottens,

Famous Rotten's Burger

This one made my top 10 list. This was a pretty messy (juicy - that's a good thing) burger with a great tasting bun, I think it was a white roll. The picture doesn't do it justice, but you get the idea.

All the good, fresh, garnish; lettuce, tomato, red onion and american cheese. Rather than mayo, I had the Rotten's secret sauce, which was pretty tasty and added a bit to the "messy" (again, that's a good thing).

The good fries and terrific atmosphere brought this bad boy home. This is a seriously good burger. Try it sometime, you won't be sorry!

Mounted on a toasted white bun, you’ll find a ½ lb of fresh, cooked to order, juicy beef burger. The burger garnish was absolutely the freshest. This burger was disgustingly great! Orlando area has some great burgers. Here is the burger menu.

As you can see, when I add my own garnish, I pile it on with fresh veggies and extra tomato. Yes, I did add a bit too much mayo, but it only made it that much better.

Char grilled Cheesburger
This was a char grilled burger with great taste and plenty of atmosphere. This guy had a nice thick juicy piece of meat and all the great garnish. Oh yeah, this restaurant hires only the best looking ladies in Indiana!

Millers Bar Burger

Miller's Bar
Dearborn, MI

Cheesburger
OK, I think I have found what I consider to be my favorite burger place!

Look at this perfectly delightful, simple burger. This is fried on the grill, and cooked the way you ask for it. I am thinking it must be at least a 1/2 pounder!
This burger is delivered (full dress)
with great meat, american cheese and a bun. You can add a thick slice of fresh onion, a pickle, ketchup & mustard from the garnish tray along with lots of napkins. That's it, there is no need for mayo, lettuce or tomatoes or anything else..
These guys go through about 800 lbs of beef a day!

GO HERE, you won't be disappointed!

Thank you Miller's for the burger and thank you Marc Ellison for your suggestion. Oh yeah..... I got the T-shirt too.

Stinky Mulligans Sports Bar
Auburn, CA

Cheesburger
This is a good sports bar cheeseburger that will delight the taste buds. I've had this one a number of times and highly recommend it. It's especially good after an appetizer of mozzarella cheese sticks and a few beers while watching the game

TGIF Cheeseburger

TGI Fridays
Central Valley, NY

Friday's Cheesburger
Had to get this one to go. I found it to be well put together. The American cheese was a good touch on this burger. Nothing fancy, just a pretty good tasting cheeseburger.
If you are every in Central Valley, NY, there isn't much to choose from, so TFIF was a welcome sight!

Cake Burger

Connie's Cakes
Grass Valley, CA

Cake Cheesburger
With my love of the Cheeseburger, what else would my sister give me on my birthday than a cake made to look like a cheeseburger.

Nicely done sis, the Bud Lights aren't a bad touch either!

I give it:**** (it is a cake!)

Backyard BBQ Burger

Dick's Burger Garden

Backyard BBQ Cheesburger
This was the real birthday burger. Homemade, not as pretty as some restaurant burgers, but plenty tasty. Nothing beats the smell of Backyard BBQ
burgers. Plenty of beer and burger cake helped this party!

Rail Head Cheeseburger

Trackside
Colfax, CA

Round House Cheeseburger
GREAT CHEESEBURGER.... What can I say, this had everything from flavor and great tasting meat to a little mustard and cheddar cheese. It was well dressed, the picture looks like it tasted. This is one of my favorites!

This place is right next to the railroad tracks and you'd swear that you are walking back into the late 1800's when you walk it

I give it:****

Lloyds Burger

Lloyd's Ltd, A Pub
Penn Yan, NY

The Works Cheeseburger
Not many places will cook your burger “medium rare”, but Lloyd’s will. The “Works Burger” was cooked just the way I like it and with all the right trim, including a big thick slice of onion.

I recommend stopping by Lloyds whenever you are in Penn Yan, NY (Where???), yep, upper state New York near Rochester. Sometimes it is the ambiance that makes a burger good, well Lloyds was a great place to have a couple beers and a burger. This is “Blues” pub with non-stop blues playing in the background. I hear they close Main St. in July and have a blues festival. I’ll need to check this out.

My apologies for the poor picture Lloyds, if you send me a better one I'll post it instead.

Wendys DBL Cheese

Cheeseburger

Durgin-Park
Boston, MA

Cheeseburger
What a great place! Bar downstairs and dining up. The waitresses all wore the 50’s-60’s style white uniforms (you know the type you’d find at a diner). Seana was our waitress, kind of brash sense of humor which really made it fun. Oh yeah, the burger... Another great burger from Boston. It was just a simple, great tasting burger. Not a lot of messy (too bad), but mayo danced it up pretty well.

Charley's Cheeseburger

Charley's
Boston, MA

Cheeseburger
Another GREAT CHEESEBURGER.... Wow, this is two in a row. I must be finding the right places.

Great environment, Garnished just right, cooked to medium perfection,  I think the 9 month aged cheddar cheese that topped this delight really gave it the great taste. Old style décor of the restaurant was very warm and welcoming. I rarely mention the fries, but this place had some great fries. I have to say, Boston has some great burger places

I give it:****

Atlantic Seafood
Boston, MA

Cheeseburger (not on the dinner menu)
This burger was to die for! Funny thing is, it wasn’t on the dinner menu, I had to ask for it. Nice fat juicy prime beef patty (a good ¾” thick) with cheddar cheese and all my favorite garnish (lettuce, tomatoes & red onion) on a very tasty white bun. The flavor of the meat really put this one on the charts.

I give it:****

Twin Peaks Burger

Twin Peaks

Sonic Dbl Cheeseburger

Sonic Burger

Sonic Double Cheeseburger
This was the first time I've had a Sonic Burger. I was surprised at how great tasting this was. It had all the right fixins and they didn't use the flame thrower on it! I'll definitely visit a Sonic again soon.

YP Cheeseburger

YP (Your Place) Restaurant
Hershey, PA

YP Mega-Cheeseburger
The first time I had this burger it looked much better than it was. By the menu, So when in Hershey, PA again, I had to give it another try;

Over 2/3 of a pound of 100% Black Angus beef on a soft kaiser roll with lettuce, tomatoes and sliced red onion with American Cheese. I added some mayo just because I sometimes do and this time, I was pleasantly surprised. This was a tasty burger! They also no longer smoke in the bar there which also made it that much better.

Oh yeah, the Bud Light was still good!

Hooters Beauties!
(mouse-over for the real beauty)

Hooters

Tallahassee, FL

Hooter's Cheeseburger
This was a pretty tasty cheeseburger. They were a little skimpy on the tomatoes, but after getting an extra one along with the mayo, this baby came to life! I've gotta say, I'd get this burger again even without the knock-out servers.

Sacramento Brewery Cheeseburger

Sacramento Brewing Company
Sacramento, CA

Maximum Cheeseburger
Rob from Sacramento turns this one in and says:

"This burger is a sleeping giant and the picture does no justice. One of the best burgers in Sacramento, ordered with grilled onions, went down the hatch with a pint of Oatmeal stout, and then toped off with a pitcher of Oatmeal stout. For rookies, I recommend this burger with hefewiezen or another fizzy yellow beer."
Rob gives it high marks, I'll need to try it!

Oh my god... I've never had a one pound burger before.
I have to say this almost topped my chart. It was garnished to perfection with my usual stuff, lettuce, tomatoes, onion and mayo. I didn't know it had grilled onion, I prefer raw sweet onion, but may what a meal! For this one, you better come hungry and you won't need your next meal! Thanks Tina

Jerry's "12 Dollar" Cheeseburger
Well, once again Jerry puts together a great looking burger. His recipe for this is top quality Beef with some added soy sauce BBQ'd to perfection then topped with Feta cheese, green pepper, onion, tomatoes, lettuce, mustard and ketchup. I wasn't there to try it, but it looks interesting to say the least! Don't look for this joint, he builds this at his home.

Oasis 1/2 Lb Cheeseburger

1/2 Lb Double Cheeseburger
Another "Great Burger" in my travels. Two pattys smothered in american cheese along with the basics, threaded lettuce, onion, tomatoes and a little mayo, made this a burger worth going back for. In fact I did!
This is one of those local pubs where everyone knows everyone else. A little smoky for me, but the burger made it worth it.
